Judge Adam represents both the power of the state and the judiciary in Kleist’s fictitious ‘global village’ Huisum, a grotesque miniature mirroring the conflict between modern systems of order and classification and the everyday reality of citizens. The hedonistic and extortionate village judge is not the only person to lie and cheat whenever he sniffs a chance to gain advantage; Marthe Rull, her daughter Eve and Eve’s fiancé Ruprecht, as well as the writer Licht are entangled in a web of deception, too. The trial of the broken jug turns into a farce, as the investigator is also the culprit – a motif present in literary and media history from Sophocles’ »Oedipus the King« to contemporary thrillers. Kleist sets the fall of the ‘new Adam’ in the political system of the middle classes, and creates a ludicrous comedy.

»The Broken Jug« is Michael Thalheimer’s first production for the Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg.
